Extratime is a parent led, charity running after school clubs and holiday schemes for disabled and non disabled children and young people at five venues in the Brighton and Hove area. The after school clubs and play schemes operate from – Hillside School Portslade, Ash Cottage (adjacent to Downs View School, Woodingdean), and St Lukes Infant School, Queens Park. Most recently, a successful partnership tender with Hove YMCA to the Children and Young People’s Trust has enabled two new youth schemes to be developed extending direct services to young people with disabilities up to the age of 19 years.

Extratime was founded by Becky Jenner and Marian Tipler both parents of children with complex needs frustrated at the lack of childcare and play opportunities for their children. The first club opened in September 2003 and children attend from the local special schools as well as the mainstream schools. In 2008 income was £319K and extratime provided places for over 400 children and young people.

The activities on offer at extratime are very similar to any mainstream scheme, giving access to the same play and leisure opportunities and experiences, but there is a big difference in staffing ratios (much higher, often 1:1) and in the way the venues are fully adapted – which is why extratime schemes are not cheap to run.

And, although parents/carers pay a fee in line with other schemes in the city, the clubs will never be self financing; a typical fee per after school session is approximately £8 whilst the actual cost of 1:1 place for a child or young person with complex disabilities is £60+.
