Youth Schemes

Building on the success of our work so far we made a successful tender to Brighton and Hove Children and Young People’s Trust to develop and deliver two new holiday schemes for young people with disabilities. Funding became available through Aiming High for Disabled Children for two years from April 2009 to Mar 2011, and we have since been able to secure further funding to enable to schemes to continue at present.

The schemes are run as a partnership between extratime and Sussex Central YMCA, bringing together the strengths and experience of both organisations, offering young people with disabilities new opportunities in mainstream youth venues – The ‘Y’ Centre, Hove and The Crew Club in Whitehawk.

Both venues offer up to 18 places a day from 8.45am to 5.30pm, 4 weeks in August, 2 weeks at Easter and every half term except Christmas. Transport is available to and from the schemes for those who need it and an exciting programme of both venue based activities including trampolining, rock climbing, archery, DJing, cookery and arts/crafts is combined with trips out swimming, bowling and the cinema. Capital grants facilitated some adaptations to the Y Centre to make a fully accessible changing area and both centres are equipped with hoists and changing benches. High staff ratios ensure all young people can access the activities on offer and the provision can meet the needs of young people with complex needs.
