Access 2 Youth

New project to increase the participation of young people with mild/moderate disabilities in our City’s youth centres

Extratime is delighted to have received some funding to help support young people with mild/moderate disabilities to access activities and facilities at the City’s youth centres for the next two years. Extratime has successfully supported children and young people in a similar way to access activities in their after school clubs and in their local community with the help of key workers in a bridging role between the child/young person and the activity provider. This new work will focus on young people aged 13-19 who will, in the main, be attending mainstream schools/colleges where support is given during the day to access the curriculum but support for out of school/college activities, especially in their local community, is lacking.

We would also like to be able to interest some young people who do not have a learning disability to become volunteer befrienders to help the young people with a disability to feel welcome in the setting. These befrienders would receive training and support, and for those that show a particular interest in going further, there will be some funding to support training, for example, a Level 2 award in sports coaching, childcare, social care or play worker with additional opportunities to gain further experience in Extratime’s projects.
